Like his opponents, he never accepted that he was President

Donald Trump left the Presidency today.

He was an anomaly in many ways but perhaps the most striking was how he was not re-elected with a good economy pre-Covid and, relatively speaking, during Covid.

Mr. Trump, a brash businessman from Queens, New York, never really changed his style which is, to put it charitably, un-Presidential.

Mr. Trump now has plenty of time to ponder why he really lost; he may not like the answer

This despite winning the office in 2016 when even he didn’t think he would.

But back then, given a choice of 4 more years of Obama economic doldrums, run by the unpalatable Hillary Clinton, voters took a chance on him.

He never repaid their confidence by toning down his abrasive style.

And when the Covid pandemic struck, such style betrayed an attitude of arrogance and seeming indifference to the threat and people it affected.

It is for historians’ conjecture as to whether it was the point of no return for his re-election.

What is certain, though, is that while some of his adversaries may be forgiven for never accepting that he was President, Mr. Trump does not deserve such absolution as he let down many people who supported him, as well as the country.
